JOB SUMMARY
This position performs unskilled manual work in the Ground Maintenance Department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs mowing, edging, blowing, trimming, and weed eating of rights-of-way, landscape islands, facilities, and other city owned property.
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools and light equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, pole saws, and power trimmers.
- Picks up and disposes of litter; loads and unloads materials, supplies, equipment, trash, and other debris.
- Performs equipment safety inspections; cleans and maintains tools and equipment; and reports mechanical or other defects to supervisor.
- Reports any safety hazards to the supervisor.
- Operates a chainsaw to trim or remove trees.
- Performs grounds maintenance duties; trims bushes and shrubs; pulls weeds; install pine straw/mulch; install sod; prune trees.
- Operates a City vehicle in the performance of duties.
- Responds to and participates in emergency calls.
- Assists with special City events (i.e. Fourth of July parade/fireworks, Shakerag Arts and Crafts Festival, etc.) and special projects.
- Work weekends and holidays as required.
- Assist other City Departments as required.
- Performs related duties as required.

- Some knowledge of the operation and maintenance of hand tools and light equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, trimmers, pole saw, etc.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include City, department, and safety policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of manual labor duties for city landscape. Heavy traffic and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the work.
- The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance of city grounds. Successful performance contributes to safe, attractive, and well-maintained landscape.

- Contacts are typically with co-workers, other City personnel, and the general public.
- Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects. The employee uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- Work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- No experience required.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a Georgia Department of Transportation Flagging Certificate.
